Kayla Koala and Her Mama by Ha-Le Thai
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Beautiful artwork accompanies flowing rhymes that are sure to delight your young child. Kayla Koala and her mother live in their trees until one day a fire threatens to destroy the forest and all the animals flee. Through an arduous journey from the outback to the streets of civilization, Kayla and her mother journey for shelter and safety. They are taken to a rescue shelter where they can finally heal until they are released into the wild once again.
While the subject matter might seem scary for younger children, it is handled with care and finesse, not making light of a serious problem in Australia (although forest fires are a problem all over the world). My kids liked the story, they liked to learn about the routines in a rescue shelter and what happens to the animals when there is a fire. The pictures helped keep the attention of my younger boys as well. Good book!
